Abstract. The notion of entanglement was introduced in discussions of the foundations of quantum mechanics, but in recent years it has been realised that it can have great practical power. The first part of this talk is a review of the concept of entanglement and some of its potential practical applications. In the second part I will describe recent joint work (with Lieven Clarisse, Simone Severini and Sibasish Ghosh) \cite{entpower} on the power of quantum operations to generate entanglement.
