Abstract. The development of a gamma laser based on long lived isomeric nuclei is shown in this work to be purely a practical problem. The cross sections for stimulated emmission and absorption between two excited levels of the quantum systems were found and the Einstein relations for the connections between the coefficients of stimulated emission and spontaneous radiation were analysed. The Einstein coefficients are shown to refer to a transition between any excited and ground state. for a transition between two excited states, the connections of the coefficients and the cross-sections of interaction differ from those of Einstein's. Besides the development of a gamma laser, the results show that changes in the study of stellar atmospheres can be expected to occur.
