Abstract. Isoscalar and isovector giant monopole resonances are investigated in a width range of spherical even-even nuclei up to hypothetical superheavy nuclei with mass number A ≤ 500. Calculated excitation energies are compared with recent experimental data. Their mass- and isospin-dependence is analyzed as well as contributions coming from volume and surface local density vibrations. A strong sensitivity of isovector energy weighted sum rules is established to the neutron excess in nuclei.
