Abstract. The reduced configuration space of a pure SU(3)-gauge theory on a spatial lattice consisting of 2 plaquettes is studied. In a sense, this is the building block for the reduced configuration space of a general finite lattice. First, by means of invariant theory, a description of the space as a semialgebraic set is given and the equations and inequalities defining the strata are derived. Second, a cell complex structure is constructed and the homology groups of the space and of its strata are computed.
