Abstract. Germanium detectors are widely used in nanosecond lifetime measurements due to their good energy resolution. Special problems arise, however, with their time per?formance at low γ-ray energy, where prompt references appear delayed compared to Compton events. This time behaviour is shown to be strongly influenced by two processes: photoeffect and Compton scattering occurring at the boundary region of the germanium crystal.
